The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) wants you to learn more about our amazing staff, the individuals behind the work of our programs including Latinos on Fast Track (LOFT), Youth Awards, Code as a Second Language and other departments!
HHF is a team of 18 individuals working out of our Washington D.C. and Los Angeles offices! We introduce you to Jasmin Zamorano, HHF’s Director of Programs. Jasmin has worked with The Foundation for 5 years, starting as an intern, and now as Director of Programs she is letting us spotlight her.
Jasmin was born in Bolivia and moved to Arlington, Virginia when she was 13 years old. In Bolivia, Jasmin was a national piano sensation. She traveled across the country for competitions and was named the national champion in her age group! Jasmin continued to play piano in high school at her school’s jazz band. Leaving her already established life in Bolivia by moving to the states was a big change for Jasmin but she grasped to every challenge that came her way.
The lack of access to express her passion for piano in America drove Jasmin to channel her determination into a different outlet. Jasmin lead her school’s varsity volleyball team to many successes, standing tall at 5’0 as their Varsity Captain for four years! She also coached her high school’s team after graduation.
After graduating high school Jasmin attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where she obtained Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Psychology. In college, Jasmin was heavily involved in conducting research and spent a lot of time in labs. However, once she graduated college at 24, she knew that a career in the lab was not for her.
Jasmin interned for HHF while she was finishing up college and once her internship ended she took a break to travel through South America. She was surprised by a message from our Chief of Staff, saying that a position at HHF was waiting for her upon return.
Jasmin started as a LOFT Coordinator in 2013 focusing on encouraging Latino students to get involved in science. Throughout her college career, she was often the only Latina in the room, and through her role at HHF she could change this by making an impact on high school Latinos. A year later, her role switched to Program Manager and in 2016 she was named Director of Programs, now overseeing all the programs at HHF.
In her role, Jasmin has seen so much, and her favorite event is the National Youth Awards. “After all the craziness of the traveling during the fall, it is amazing to have a moment to sit down and feel the impact that you are making on these kids’ lives… it is my favorite time of the year. Hearing their stories makes me hopeful for the future of our community.”
Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO, and Roberto Callejas, Chief of Staff at HHF, as well as many other previous HHF team-members have been integral to her time working with the Foundation. “I could never fail, I couldn’t ask for better bosses… I am very thankful for the freedom HHF has given me to learn, grow and lead.”
Jasmin is adventurous and enjoys traveling during her free time. Having lived in Chile for a short period of time in her teenage years before moving to the United States, this is where her love for traveling first began. She fell in love with everything that comes with traveling, experiencing different cultures, meeting new people, trying new foods, and is thankful for each experience.
Jasmin’s work to every program at HHF does not go unnoticed, thank you for your commitment Jasmin, HHF is lucky to have you!
Stay tuned to learn more about our staff in the weeks to come!
