A senior at Coral Gables Senior High School, Rayden Llano is the Gold Medallion 2006 Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards Miami Regional Winner in Healthcare, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline. Rayden, who is of Cuban descent, has a 4.00 GPA, is Valedictorian of his class, was a Silver Knight Nominee for Science, a finalist for the Discovery Channel’s National Competition and a Quest Scholar at Stanford University. He has volunteered for two years at the Coulter Platelet Laboratory at the University of Miami assisting with research on a hematological disorder in which the immune system destroys its own platelets. Rayden was happy to discover several scientists of Cuban heritage would be his mentors for the program, making it an especially satisfying and enriching experience. His love of medicine is also evident in his community service projects. After learning of the benefits of juicing for cancer patients, he founded a program through the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge to educate residents there about adding juices to their diets. Rayden will begin classes at Stanford University this September and major in Cellular Biology. |
