Nancy Fernandez
Engineering & Mathematics

Loyola School senior Nancy Fernandez is the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards New York Regional winner for Mathematics, sponsored by the Exxon Mobil Corporation.  The 18-year-old daughter of Gloria Gonzalez and Nestor Fernandez, Nancy?s dream is to learn several languages, cure an illness and travel the world. Ambition has never been a problem for the Puerto Rican/Argentine, who was taught by her mother to always believe in herself and that anything is possible. She has maintained a grade-point average of 4.0 throughout all four years of high school. She has been awarded National Hispanic Scholar Recognition, was interviewed by CBS TV for the Leaders for Tomorrow show, Quest Scholar at Harvard University, and received the following medals in her school?s 2001 Academic Convocation: gold in English and Theology, silver in Mathematics. She is a member of the Math League, the Loyola Singers, and received Dr. Francisco Yllescas Barrerio Award for excellence in History.  She has also received Achievement Awards in the Loyola Blazer (her school?s publication), the varsity volleyball team and varsity track team; Honors Award from the American Chemical Society. She Qualified for and won trophies at the New York State Forensics Tournament for Original Oratory and Declamation. Nancy is also involved with Loyola Speech Team, the Loyola Singers and Loyola Math League; she works as a Peer Tutor, and volunteers at the Mary Manning Walsh Nursing Home; she is also a retreat leader and a Eucharistic minister. Nancy is currently attending Stanford University. Her major is either psychology or human biology and minoring in dance.
