| Usbaldo credits his mother, Sara, for single handedly shaping him into the man he is today. A "Diamond In The Rough," Usbaldo's life began like so many other barrio children who lack the support group needed to lead and succeed. The difference in Usbaldo's life is that he has broken away from his destructive background. Despite facing the negatives of poverty his entire life, he has always kept his mind on two things: to set a good example for his baby sister and to make a positive impact on younger Hispanics in his community. He serves others and gives his time and efforts selflessly. Usbaldo has participated in the Peer Assistance and Leadership program for two years, mentoring younger students who are at risk. He also has given his energies to assist in retirement homes, children shelters and various community fundraisers. He believes that "if we are going to liberate ourselves then we have to struggle together and succeed together." Usbaldo has been a representative of the National Honor Society for three years and a Student Council representative for two years. He was the president of the National Spanish Honor Society and vice president of the Octagon club. He plans to major in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and looks forward to returning to his barrio and restoring its promise. Usbaldo is the kind of role model that can help many children see their path out of poverty and hardship. This is true effective leadership. |
