?Everything in life is possible,? says Yin? De la Cruz, who is the 2003 National Hispanic Heritage Youth Award winner for Mathematics, sponsored by ExxonMobil. Of Dominican descent, Yin? experienced several obstacles early in life. At age 5, she moved from Manhattan to the Dominican Republic, and did not return until she was 12. With the language and culture barriers, the readjustment was difficult ? but Yin? overcame all of the obstacles in her path. An anonymous donor gave her a scholarship to attend a private school, Aquinas High School, in the Bronx. She graduated in the top 1% of her class, was Salutatorian of her high school class at Aquinas, and was a member of the National Honors Society, the National Spanish Honor Society, the Tri?stigma Historical Honor Society, and a recipient of the Principal?s Honors. Along with her academic achievements, she is also an active member of her church, participating in its youth group and parish council and serving as a religious instructor. Yin? is very involved in athletics, and was a member of her school?s varsity volleyball and basketball teams as well as the engineering club. Because of her accomplishments, Yin? was selected to be a part of the Inner City Scholarship Jobs Program, designed to give academically talented inner city youth the opportunity to work in a professional work setting for 12 weeks during the summer. Yin? was chosen to work at the New York City firm of Bloomberg Associates. She will attend Manhattan College in the fall, where she will major in Engineering. |
