| In eighth grade, Carmen Zambrano-Elster took a broadcast journalism class. As she sat in the anchor’s seat fulfilling an assignment, it struck her that there, in front of the camera is where she belongs. Carmen dreams of not only becoming a news anchor but revolutionizing the was that news is delivered, making it more personal and compassionate. Extremely dedicated to her goals, Carmen has spent two summers taking science classes to ensure that she would be able to schedule in a drama course during the school year. Her hard work and sacrifices paid off as Carmen progressed from soundboard manager to ensemble dancer to lead actress in her school’s productions. Outside of school, Carmen has spent four years dancing with the San Diego Civic Dance Company with whom she has had the opportunity to serve as an ambassador of dance, performing at cultural events and fundraisers throughout the city. Because of her own Swedish and Mexican heritage, Carmen appreciates diversity and sees broadcast journalism as a way to connect with minority communities and highlight their achievements. Though Carmen’s specific major has yet to be decided, she will begin in pursuit of her overall goals this fall at Mills College. |
