| Edgar Manuel Barron, is a senior at Benito Juarez Community Academy, and is the Chicago Regional Silver Medallion 2006 Hispanic Heritage Youth Award recipient in Leadership, sponsored by the Kellogg Company. Edgar is a first generation Mexican American and will be the first in his family to attend college. He is among the top ten students in his graduating class, with a 4.29 GPA, and is on the honor roll -- but what stands out even more is his gift for writing. Edgar was asked to assist in the selection of his classmates’ stories for an anthology of their best pieces called Insert Title Here. He also uses this talent as part of the yearbook staff, for which he is an editor; raising funds, and organizing senior events. Edgar is a member of the Senior Council, one of only two males elected to that body, and he has worked with Alderman Danny Solis on making his community a National Historic District. This busy senior still finds the time to volunteer at Ruiz Elementary School where each summer he helps get the facilities ready for September and tutors his classmates in high school English. Edgar will be a freshman this fall at the University of Illinois at Chicago and he is deciding between a major in Business Administration and Accounting. |
