The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) will host the 18th Annual National Youth Awards Ceremony on Thursday, January 26, 2017 in Miami, Florida!
HHF is honored to present the Engineering Recipient, Adheli Gonzalez. Adheli serves as a role models to others, and is a true example of hard work.
Adheli Gonzalez, who is of Mexican descent, believes that with engineering, anything is possible. Her first introduction to the field was thanks to the Women in Engineering Summer Program (WIESP) in which she participated. The program sparked her interest in engineering and during her first summer at WIESP, she focused on computer science and civil engineering. She built bridges, designed an app using code, and redesigned Chicago based on the necessities of the city. During her second year, she focused on biomedical, mechanical and industrial engineering. The projects she worked on, some of which included designing and 3D-printing medical tweezers, testing the neurons on a cockroach’s leg, soldering a SpikerBox, and working with real cells, cemented her interest in the field.
Adheli is also actively involved in her school and community. She is a member of the Math Team, Co-President of Somos Latinos Aspirantes, Secretary for the Young Doctor’s League, and Secretary and Treasurer for Latinos Unidos. Adheli is a member of the National Honor Society and still finds time to serve as a community leader as a volunteer at her local library. She is a previous participant at the Weekend Immersion in Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she soldered circuit boards to create functional night-lights.
She is also the recipient of the Swarthmore Book Award, is an AP Scholar, an Illinois and ISAC State Scholar, and the winner of the Hispanic Heritage Organization Essay Contest, as well as the Perspective Gallery Photography Contest. Adheli holds an impressive 4.94 cumulative GPA and has applied to Harvard University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Yale University, University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Adheli plans to major in biomedical engineering.
