Whiteboard Advisors, Trinity University, ACT Center for Equity in Learning, and Hispanic Heritage Foundation to present ‘Hacking Diversity in Education Leadership’ at SXSW 2022
AUSTIN, TX – With guidance from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, the ACT Center for Equity in Learning, Trinity University, and Whiteboard Advisors, will present ‘Hacking Diversity in Education Leadership’ on March 8th – 11:00 a.m., (CT) at the Hilton Austin Downtown, as part of the South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals.
Education leadership today, from the classroom level through superintendency through higher education, does not reflect nearly the same depth of diversity as our student population–in race, gender, or grade level teaching background. Educators of every race, gender, & level are invited to this interactive & collaborative forum on diversifying education leadership. This workshop will collectively generate policy & practice recommendations for education stakeholders.
“We are thrilled to be back at SXSW being part of this important effort, which will provide educators from all over the country with a perspective to address equity and inclusion in the education system,” said Jose Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. “We appreciate Carlos Zavala, Nancy Lewin, and Juan Sepúlveda’s leadership in continuing to identify the needs and solutions that guarantee us with quality education for all.”
Dr. Nancy Lewin is a senior director in ACT’s Center for Equity in Learning where she focuses at the program and local level on the intersections of equity innovation and improvement in schools, districts, and postsecondary institutions. She is responsible for the Center’s activities pertaining to school, district and post-secondary partner networks around improvement, innovation and equity aligned with the strategic focus of the Center. This includes the digital divide, student success for underserved populations, and leveraging the use of ACT products, resources, research, and expertise in collaboration with internal and external partnerships.
Juan Sepúlveda is Trinity University’s first President’s Special Advisor for Inclusive Excellence. The position is tasked with the administration, management, coordination, and implementation of campus-wide programming that promotes diversity and fosters inclusion and access for students, employees, alumni, and other stakeholders. Juan is also the Ron Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice in Political Science where he teaches urban and presidential politics, state and federal elections and campaigns, urban education, community building and leadership. In partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, he created and led the Dream Lead Institute, a year-long leadership development program aimed at young professional Dreamer leaders from across the country and the Latinos on the Fast Track (LOFT) Leadership Institute, a year-long program for top Latino high school students. He also started Trinity’s first Latinx leadership development class with his colleague, Dr. Rita Urquijo-Ruiz.
Carlos Zavala, Director at Whiteboard Advisors, brings a passion for equity and storytelling to his work at Whiteboard. Carlos supports a broad range of organizations (from early-stage startups to Fortune 500 companies) who are using data and technology to create new pathways to economic mobility for working learners.
