Public Knowledge: Emerging Tech DC
On May 7th, 2018, Public Knowledge hosted its inaugural Emerging Tech DC event. Emerging Tech DC (ET/DC) expanded on the success of 3D/DC to include new areas in addition to 3D printing: artificial intelligence, the internet of things and potentially virtual reality. HHF’s Innovation and Technology Manager, Alberto Avalos was a panelist on the Emerging Tech DC Panel.
First, each of these topics were addressed in individual, hour long panels. Panelists included innovators currently developing and using these emerging technologies, academics and public interest groups.
In addition, participants attended a reception where creators displayed their applications of 3D printing, artificial intelligence, internet of things and virtual reality. Therefore, this was an opportunity to discuss the existing technologies with creators, and see first hand how they work.
Panel – Future of Work, Artificial Intelligence
Therefore, the artificial intelligence panel focused on the future of work in the age of big data. Panelists discussed how AI may change the workforce, what may be done to mitigate potential harms and what policy makers can do now to ensure that the societal benefits of AI outweigh the harms.
