MIAMI—NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, the leading media company serving Hispanics in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, in partnership with Comcast’s Internet Essentials program and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, today announced a gift of over 1,000 laptops and free internet service for a year to young people, students, and seniors across the United States. The laptops and internet access are being donated by Comcast, with technology training for laptop recipients being provided by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.
The laptop giveaway ties into Comcast’s broader mission to help close the digital divide and is one facet of Telemundo’s holiday campaign, Felices Fiestas, which celebrates the value of relationships and hope for the future. Dedicated segments will accompany a custom jingle and special programming throughout the holiday season. The donation contributes to learning gaps for students and to social isolation for seniors — issues that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. By focusing on these demographics, the company aims to create opportunities for intergenerational connections and provide bonding experiences among family members who need a safe, socially distanced way to see loved ones during the holiday season. In addition, while the pandemic keeps many students out of physical classrooms, technology becomes vital for distance learning and helping young people continue with their studies.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has deepened the digital divide, with many members of our community experiencing economic insecurity and hardship,” said Christina Kolbjornsen, Senior Vice President of Corporate and External Affairs at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “This time of year is traditionally when we’re together with loved ones, and we’re pleased to do our part to help families everywhere connect meaningfully this year and for years to come.”
Laptop distribution kicks off today and will continue throughout the holiday season in several Telemundo markets, including Boston, Chicago, Denver, Fresno, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City and Washington D.C. Recipients were selected in partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation and local community partners, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County, Miami, Metro Denver and Greater Salt Lake, Blackstone Community Center of Boston, Back of the Yard Neighborhood Council of Chicago, Tejano Center of Houston and Concillio of Philadelphia.
“At a time that has been isolating for many of us and will be even more pronounced during this Holiday Season, access to the internet provides a lifeline for friends and relatives who have gone months without seeing one another,” said Antonio Tijerino, President and CEO, Hispanic Heritage Foundation. “This is an essential service, and we couldn’t be prouder to partner with Telemundo, Comcast and local organizations to ensure that families in need can stay connected this Holiday Season and beyond.”
Comcast Internet Essentials has helped connect more than 8 million low-income people to the Internet at home. Earlier this year, the service announced a multiyear program to launch more than 1,000 WiFi-connected “Lift Zones” in community centers nationwide to help students get online, participate in distance learning, and do their homework. This initiative will expand in-home technology and internet access to seniors as well as students.
