Writer, director, and comedian Julio Torres to receive Hispanic Heritage Award for Vision at the Kennedy Center and on PBS
Multiple-Emmy®-nominee, Peabody and WGA-winning Salvadoran creative force to join Designer Carolina Herrera, Beautyblender Creator Rea Ann Silva, NBA Star Carmelo Anthony, Legendary Cumbia Band Los Ángeles Azules, and Roberto Clemente (first-ever posthumous) as Hispanic Heritage Awardees.

WASHINGTON, DC – The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) announced today that Emmy®-Nominated, Peabody and WGA-Winning Writer, Director, and Comedian from El Salvador, Julio Torres, will receive the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Award for Vision during the 37th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards (HHAs) at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Opera House on September 5th and will be featured on the PBS broadcast, online and PBS video app on September 27th.
Torres joins Designer Carolina Herrera, Beautyblender Creator Rea Ann Silva, NBA Star Carmelo Anthony, Legendary Cumbia Band Los Ángeles Azules, and First-Posthumous Honoree Roberto Clemente as Hispanic Heritage Awardees. Stay tuned for host, performer and sponsor announcements coming soon.

Julio Torres has received four Emmy® nominations for his work on Saturday Night Live, on which he has served as a writer from 2016 to 2021. In 2023, he was recognized as an honoree in TIME Magazine’s TIME100 Next list, under the “artists” category. The annual list, inspired by the publication’s flagship TIME100, recognizes 100 rising individuals from across industries who are shaping the future of their fields and defining the next generation of leadership.
Torres made his directorial feature film debut with A24’s Problemista, which premiered at SXSW in March 2023. Torres also wrote the film and stars alongside Tilda Swinton, Isabella Rosselini, and RZA. The film, produced by Emma Stone and Dave McCary via their Fruit Tree banner, was released in March 2024. Most recently, Torres wrote, directed, executive produced and starred in HBO’s six-episode series Fantasmas, which premiered on June 7th.
Torres can also be seen in both seasons of his HBO series Los Espookys, a Spanish-language (with English subtitles) comedy, which he co-created with Fred Armisen and Ana Fabrega, receiving a 2023 Peabody Award in Entertainment, GLAAD Award and Dorian Award, in addition to being named one of the New York Times’ Best TV Shows of 2022.
Julio Torres will join other announced 2024 Hispanic Heritage Award honorees including designer Carolina Herrera, Beautyblender creator Rea Ann Silva, NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, Mexican cumbia band Los Ángeles Azules and first-ever special posthumous honoree Roberto Clemente. The HHAs, supported by 40 national Hispanic-serving institutions, were established by The White House in 1988 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in America and broadcast on PBS.
