The Hispanic Heritage Foundation hosted a Code as a Second Language (CSL) Bootcamp sponsored by Infosys Foundation USA at the Junior Achievement of Greater Chicago!

CSL Fellow, George Valladares, Project Engineer Intern at McShane Construction Company, led the Bootcamp. CSL fellows act as leaders within the community and guide young minds through their initial journey through technology.

“My experience as a CSL fellow is invaluable. Prior to that, I hadn’t really engaged in formally leading a class. I was thrown into the deep end but being the person I am, I loved it. I have always believed in learning through experience than going through the theory. I may not have converted all those children into the world of CS but I left just as happy knowing they were exposed to CS and saw someone who looked like them and knowing they could achieve anything,” said George.

“Outside of the program, I have been introduced to a vast network of awesome people in their own right. I was blown away how many other people were just as excited about CS and helping the new wave of people. The experiences I have been provided with through HHF have been one great time and I wish to continue to contribute as much as I can.”

In 2017 alone, CSL has launched Bootcamps and Academies in Oakland, San Jose, Portland, Austin, among others! CSL Bootcamps are an opportunity where students learn a condensed introduction to computer science through a block based learning curriculum with the goal of growing the community of Latino software engineers. At these technical training Bootcamps, students gain insight on what is necessary to build games and other gaming applications.

HHF is committed to providing students with resources to technology, and our vision is possible by allowing students to stay connected with year-round access to the LOFT Innovation leadership and workforce development programs including STEM Symposia, Innovation Fellowships, Youth Awards, mentoring and other work-based learning opportunities.
