Staff Spotlight: Administrative Events Assistant

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) wants you to learn more about our amazing staff, the individuals behind the work of our programs including the Hispanic Heritage Awards, Latinos on Fast Track (LOFT), Youth AwardsCode as a Second Language and other initiatives!

HHF is a team of 18 individuals working out of our Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles offices, among others. We introduce you to Sabas Gomez, HHF’s Administrative Events Assistant.

Sabas was born in Los Angeles, California right outside of Santa Monica, and whose parents both migrated from Guatemala. “My mother is part Salvadorian, I was raised Guatemalan, but I do like to bring it out because it is still a part of me. I have three brothers, and I was the only one born in the Unites States. When I was five, my grandma had a life or death event happen in her life, and my mom knew she needed to be back in Guatemala, so we moved back, and I lived there till I was nine.”

“I moved back to the states, which was my biggest challenge, and I moved to Arlington, Virginia when I was nine and a half. My aunt has been my second maternal image, one of my biggest supporters throughout my journey.” Sabas has enjoyed living in one the of nation’s diverse cities, Washington DC ever since.

Being away from his family had its challenges, as he was only able to visit Guatemala a few times since the move back to the states. “With the help of my high school principal and superintendent I was able to bring my mom from Guatemala to attend my graduation. My mom was so proud of me, and till this day I see it as one of my biggest accomplishments.” In high school, Sabas was part of the student government and played water sports. Sabas started working at the age of 15 while he was a sophomore in high school and had to grow up a little sooner than most other people his age. Although he started working at a young age, he has always enjoyed staying busy, which has kept him grounded.

After high school, he attended Northern Virginia Community College, where he obtained his Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts and Science/Liberal Studies. Sabas has worked as a corporate trainer for Uncle Julio’s Corporation, where he was responsible for providing on the job education to newly hired employees, as well as enhance education to current employees. Wanting to make a career move, Sabas was ready to start looking for a new opportunity. Like a true HHF familia, he was working at this restaurant when our Chief of Staff, Roberto Callejas, and Director of Programs, Jasmin Zamorano introduced him with a job opportunity as the Administrative Assistant at the Foundation, along with event planning. The start of a new job always presents its challenges, but Sabas was very appreciative that Roberto had tremendous faith in him and his work ethic.

As HHF’s Administrative Events Assistant, Sabas is responsible for supporting managers and employees through tasks related to programs, communication, events and logistics. Sabas handles every event with care, provides genuine hospitality and organizes memorable events for our programs that take place in different cities across the country. “It has been my honor and privilege to work with HHF. My favorite events to plan and attend are the National Youth Awards and our LOFT STEM Symposia. Being at these events and ceremonies demonstrates the impact that the Foundation is making on the youth.” Sabas also makes a meaningful impact on the kids, as he is truly able to connect with students in every city that HHF visits. He is an energetic soul who always has a joke up his sleeve, ready to make everyone and anyone laugh.
